ONE TRASH BAG A WEEK
Let me show you how to make a molehill out of your own mountain of trash.

Spring 2010- Eco Article
SKIP INDIVIDUALLY WRAPPED PRODUCTS. Instead of buying crackers in a single-serving packets, buy the large box and use small reusable containers. Think not only crackers, but juice boxes, cheese, most everything these days come in individual containers. A reusable container will work for on the go people and kids. So much of what we do is for convenience, but all that packaging becomes a lot of waste.
GET CREATIVE. Repurpose plastic bread bags as sandwich bags, recycle the plastic cereal bags inside the boxes for chips or nuts for lunch. Think outside the box, think of a way to repurpose the box! Give a second life to whatever you can.
COMPOST. To get the best suburban dirt, all the kitchen waste can go in a bin kept under the sink or on the counter and taken to the compost pile once a day.
KEEP RECYCLING BINS HANDY. Except for the paper & cardboard recycle bin, (which is in the utility room), mine are outside next to my waste container. That way it is a constant reminder of what needs to be in the recycle bins, not the trash! It is also handy and convenient; make recycling easy and you're more likely to do it.
THINK BEFORE BUYING NEW. A good mantra is from Casey Eckels at Trash 2 Treasure. Her mum always told her, “use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.” Prompt your kids to search through household supplies before asking for new pencils or notebooks for school. I can't help but notice items in our waste bins that could be reused or repurposed, or even donated to a needy child.
STOCK UP ON CANVAS, OR CLOTH SHOPPING BAGS. My collection of reusable shopping bags now numbers about 30, Jon & I take them to every store, including Publix. People say one bag won't matter, but it all adds up. Especially when you notice one blowing across the street headed straight to one of our beautiful Fort Lauderdale canals.
